Drumming icon, percussionist, band leader Tommy Igoe believes “there should be a place where music lovers can hear the best musicians in the world pushing their acoustic talents right to the edge – music with a very high ‘wow’ factor.”

With the release of “Eleven,” Tommy Igoe and the Birdland Big Band have done just that – delivered a collection of music with a very high ‘wow’ factor!

Igoe assembled 19 of New York’s finest musicians to be the “best band you’ve ever heard. Not just the best jazz band, but the greatest musical experience you’ve ever had.” A lofty goal…indeed!

They’ve already proven to be the hottest big band in New York, with sold-out performances every Friday night at the Birdland Jazz Club in Manhattan and, Eleven captures the dynamic, full throttle energy of the band’s signature arrangements.

This is swing with some serious swagger!

From the start, with “New Ground,” it’s clear that Tommy Igoe and the Birdland Big Band intend to take the listener on a musical journey that expands the idea of what a modern big band should sound like.  What follows is a rich, musical palette of jazz and funk layered with a hardy Latin flavor of mainly modern compositions by Chick Corea, Michel Camilo, Herbie Hancock, Michael Brecker and more.

Tommy Igoe and company present their case for “best band you’ve ever heard” with arrangements, musicianship and solos throughout the album that are second to none. Bobby Timmons’ “Moanin’” with an arrangement and solo by Rob Middleton, tenor sax, and the addition of Rod Paprozzi on harmonica is a bluesy gem.  “Armando’s Rhumba” and Herbie Hancock’s “Butterfly” are two of many standout arrangements. Bassist Kenny Archer brings significant funk to a smoldering rendition of Corea’s “Got a Match” and Tommy Igoe’s versatility and prodigious musical chops are on full display throughout.

Tommy Igoe and the Birdland Big Band’s Eleven is an “all killer no filler” recording that just might be the best musical experience you’ll ever have.
